Tension has risen over the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties first shook Delhi with protests, and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has now also announced an agitation.
Before that, CJP founders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurabh Das were detained by Delhi Police at Delhi airport. Police have also detained some leaders of opposition parties.
Following these events, environmentalist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has entered the matter and warned the government.
With CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke in police custody, Ajinkya Shinde is reported to be leading the agitation. Shinde's stance is that the agitation will go on no matter what.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk demanded that the detained opposition leaders be released at the earliest. He warned that if all the leaders are not released by tomorrow, he will have to take the path of starting a fast or a padyatra. This is likely to give the agitation a new turn.
Wangchuk alleged that the country, the world's largest democracy, is currently in a state of undeclared Emergency. He said several leaders had come forward to lead the agitation and he had been pleased to see that. But after these leaders were arrested, he expressed displeasure over the role of the government and the police.
Earlier, the CJP and Sonam Wangchuk are reported to have launched a joint agitation demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Wangchuk had fasted during that agitation. He has now stepped in once again in the agitation over the demand for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
Thus, on one side there is the demand for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, and on the other all three CJP founders and some opposition leaders are in police custody. Amid these circumstances, Wangchuk has set a deadline of tomorrow.
Political circles are now watching whether the detained leaders are released, and whether Sonam Wangchuk actually begins a fast or a padyatra. The future course of the agitation will depend on these developments.
