Political talk has picked up in the city over the Nagpur division graduates' constituency election. The reason is that the name of former Maharashtra minister Satish Chaturvedi has figured in the account of a meeting of professors. The meeting was held in support of Sudhakar Kohle, the BJP-Mahayuti candidate.
The Congress has fielded Abhijit Wanjari from the seat. Questions are therefore being raised about the equations within the Nagpur Congress. Chaturvedi had been expelled from the party and returned to the Congress recently, which has added to the talk about his name figuring in a campaign-linked event. However, his actual role in the event is not yet clear. The matter could put the Congress leadership in a politically awkward position.
A meeting of professors was held for Kohle's campaign at the Priyadarshani Campus on Digdoh Hills, Hingna Road. A message sent by Dr Rajesh Gadewar, a BJP-linked office-bearer, said several political and academic figures were associated with the gathering, and Chaturvedi's name was counted among them.
According to the organisers' message, the meeting discussed issues concerning graduates, challenges in the education sector and the expectations of teachers and professors. An appeal for support to Kohle was also made.
Given Chaturvedi's recent return to the Congress, the appearance of his name in the event account is raising questions about his political position. But it has not been independently confirmed whether he actively campaigned for Kohle, openly backed his candidature, or was merely present at the meeting.
When the Congress has fielded Wanjari, the party generally expects its leaders and workers to stand with the official candidate. A senior leader's name being linked to an event in support of a rival candidate has therefore become a talking point.
There is also the question of whether this signals factionalism within the Nagpur Congress, and whether some sections of the party are unhappy with the candidate or the election strategy. The questions have arisen amid speculation over the internal equations of the local unit. Even so, the available information does not establish that Congress leaders are deliberately working against Wanjari or trying to defeat him. Before drawing any conclusion about the party's internal state, Chaturvedi's actual role and the circumstances of his presence there need to be clarified.
Attention now turns to whether the Congress leadership will seek an explanation from Chaturvedi or view the matter from the standpoint of party discipline. No official response from the Congress on the issue has come so far.
The graduates' constituency election is an important contest for both the BJP and the Congress. If it were ever confirmed that a party leader was backing the rival candidate, concern could arise over organisational coordination and the effect on Wanjari's campaign.
The larger questions now are what Chaturvedi's role in the event was, how the Congress leadership responds, and whether the episode points to deeper differences within the Nagpur unit. The answers will decide whether the controversy remains political talk or becomes a major organisational issue.
