The secondary education department in Maharashtra has released the Diwali holiday schedule for the 2026-27 academic year. Recognised private secondary and higher secondary schools in the state will have a long Diwali break from November 2, 2026.
According to the department's circular, the break will run from Monday, November 2, to Saturday, November 14, 2026. Schools will reopen on Monday, November 16, 2026, and the second term of the academic year will also begin on that date. With the dates fixed in advance, students, parents and teachers will find it easier to make their plans.
Several Diwali-linked festivals fall during this period, including Dhanatrayodashi, Diwali Padwa and Bhaubeej, giving children time to celebrate with their families. The official schedule will also help parents plan travel, events at home and other arrangements.
As per the academic calendar, the first term began on June 15, 2026, and will end on October 31, 2026. The Diwali break follows. The second term will run from November 16, 2026, to May 1, 2027.
A summer break follows the end of the second term. The schedule says it will run from Monday, May 3, 2027, to Monday, June 14, 2027.
Along with the Diwali break, the department has issued some instructions on the working of schools. Holidays of all kinds across the academic year should not exceed 76 days. Schools must also complete at least 230 working days in the academic year.
Any change to holidays for festivals such as Ganeshotsav or Christmas will need the prior permission of the education officer. The department has also made it clear that schools should not make changes of their own to the holiday schedule it has fixed. The aim of the instructions is to ensure that teaching in schools is completed according to the fixed schedule.
Parents are advised to confirm the official circular and local notices with their school.
