Sarvapitri Amavasya falls on Saturday, October 10. It is the last day of Pitru Paksha and is considered very important. Shraddha is performed on this day for those whose date of death is not known, or who forgot to perform the rites.

Along with shraddha, giving donations on this day is also considered auspicious. It is a religious belief that donations made on this day bring the blessings of all ancestors. Here is a look at what can be donated on Sarvapitri Amavasya.

Black sesame: Donating black sesame seeds on Sarvapitri Amavasya is considered auspicious. It is said that doing so removes Pitru Dosh and can end the troubles one faces in life. Along with the blessings of ancestors, good health is also said to follow.

Grain: In Hinduism, donating grain is regarded as a great donation, which is why it is considered auspicious on Sarvapitri Amavasya. Items such as wheat, rice, pulses and fruit can be donated. Such donations bring the blessings of Goddess Annapurna along with those of the ancestors.

Clothes: Donating clothes on Sarvapitri Amavasya is believed to bring liberation to ancestors. Items such as a dhoti, kurta and shawls or wraps can be donated. According to religious belief, donating clothes brings honour and respect.

Jaggery: Donating jaggery on Sarvapitri Amavasya is believed to bring the gift of a child and remove obstacles in life. It is said that the blessings of ancestors remain and peace and happiness prevail in the family.

Silver: Silver is regarded as a symbol of purity and positivity. According to religious belief, donating silver frees one from Pitru Dosh. Silver utensils can also be donated on this day. Donating silver may bring positivity into life and mental peace.

Significance of Sarvapitri Amavasya: Sarva Pitru Amavasya is the last day of Pitru Paksha. It is considered the most important day for the shraddha of all known and unknown ancestors. According to the Garuda Purana, if a person does not know the date of death of their ancestors, or cannot perform shraddha on a particular date, they can earn merit by performing shraddha on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
