Sarvapitri Amavasya on October 10 coincides with Shani Amavasya and Gajachhaya Yoga
The last day of Pitru Paksha falls on October 10 this year, and it is considered more significant because of two rare coincidences.
Sarvapitri Amavasya, the last day of Pitru Paksha, falls on October 10 this year. It is said that on this day all the ancestors return to Pitrulok, which is why the day is given greater importance. Many people also observe a fast.
Shraddha is performed on Sarvapitri Amavasya for those who do not know the date on which their forebears died. This year the day is more special because Shani Amavasya also falls on it and Gajachhaya Yoga is forming. Gajachhaya Yoga forms when the Hasta nakshatra falls on an Amavasya. It is said that if pind daan is offered to ancestors during this yoga, they attain liberation and are greatly appeased.
Shraddha is not performed at just any time; there is an auspicious muhurat for it. The muhurats for October 10 are as follows. The first is from 6.31 am to 8 am. The second is from 9.30 am to 10.59 am. The Abhijit muhurat is from 11.45 am to 12.31 pm. It is said that performing shraddha and tarpan during these times brings the best results.
A way of performing shraddha at home has also been described. Wake up early, bathe, put on clean clothes and first remember your ancestors. Resolve in your mind that the souls of all known and unknown ancestors of the family find peace. Then take the name of your chosen deity and of Lord Vishnu.
Next, take clean water in a copper pot, add a few black sesame seeds and offer the water in the names of your ancestors. This is called tarpan. For the actual procedure, the mantras, the direction to face and how to wear the janeu, consult a knowledgeable Brahmin. Do not do anything without knowing how.
Charity is also described as very important on this day. Donate food in the names of ancestors, feed Brahmins and needy people, and donate grain. Feed cows, dogs and crows too, since the ancestors are believed to come in the form of these animals. Rice, wheat, jaggery, ghee and clothes can be donated.
It is said that charity given on this day is never wasted and its merit goes directly to the ancestors. Seek forgiveness from ancestors sincerely and pray that happiness, peace and prosperity remain in the home. It is said that charity given with devotion fulfils all wishes. Do not forget October 10, and set aside some time for your ancestors.
