Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ramesh Pawar, posted with the CBD Belapur traffic branch in Navi Mumbai, has been accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a motorist. The money was allegedly sought to avoid drink-driving action. A video of the alleged incident went viral on social media, after which Pawar was suspended.

On the video surfacing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Rahul Khade took the matter seriously. After a preliminary inquiry, Pawar was suspended and further investigation was ordered.

The incident is said to have taken place on Saturday night. Traffic police had set up a checkpoint in front of the entrance of the CIDCO office in CBD Belapur, as part of a drive against drink-driving. A car driver was reportedly found drunk during this time.

As per the rules, action should have been taken against the driver under the Motor Vehicles Act. But ASI Pawar is alleged to have demanded Rs 5,000 from the driver to spare him this action. The matter came into the spotlight after the video of the alleged incident spread on social media.

Dr Khade had ordered an inquiry immediately. The preliminary inquiry found serious negligence, and Pawar has therefore been suspended until further orders. The further investigation has been handed to Mujawar, Senior Police Inspector of the Kharghar traffic division. The inquiry is expected to bring out more information about the alleged incident.

Speaking on the action, Dr Khade said the suspension was ordered as soon as the details of the employee came to light. He said the aim was to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that the image of the police force is not tarnished.

The matter is being discussed because the employee responsible for people's safety and for enforcing traffic rules is himself accused of demanding a bribe. All eyes are now on what the further investigation reveals.
