Buyers of electric SUVs often wonder how far the range claimed by the company differs from what a vehicle actually delivers on the road. A real-world test of the MG Hector Tomahawk EV offers an answer. The electric SUV is priced at Rs 19.50 lakh to Rs 23.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available in both 5-seater and 7-seater options.
According to the test results, the company's claimed range is 517 km, while the estimated real-world range was 446 km. The actual combined range is thus lower than the company's claim of 517 km.
The MG Hector Tomahawk EV has a 69.2 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack. A permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle produces 204hp of power and 310Nm of torque. The company claims the SUV can run up to 517 km on a single charge. The vehicle weighs 1,908 kg and has three driving modes: Eco, Standard and Sport.
During the test in the city, the SUV's efficiency was recorded at 7.15 km/kWh. On this figure, a range of about 495 km is possible on a full charge. Frequent braking and changes of speed in city traffic can alter the efficiency of electric vehicles. The strong mode was used for regenerative braking in this test.
On the highway, the SUV's efficiency was recorded at 5.73 km/kWh, which works out to a range of about 397 km. The combined city and highway efficiency was 6.44 km/kWh, and on this basis a real-world range of about 446 km on one charge is estimated. Speed, use of the air conditioner, road conditions and driving style also affect the range.
On fast charging, MG claims that a 90kW DC fast charger takes 35 minutes to charge the battery from 30% to 80%. In the actual test, charging from 20% to 80% on a 150kW DC fast charger took 32 minutes. The maximum charging speed recorded during this was about 89kW.
Overall, the real-world range of the MG Hector Tomahawk EV can be taken as around 446 km. However, these are test figures, and every customer will not necessarily get the same range. Before buying, it is important to consider one's daily travel pattern, charging facilities and the nearby charging stations.
