Volkswagen to unveil electric ID. Tiguan in October, replacing ID.4 and ID.5
Volkswagen will present the ID. Tiguan electric SUV in early October, with a global market launch expected in early 2027.
Volkswagen is preparing to take its well-known Tiguan name into the electric SUV segment. The company's new ID. Tiguan electric SUV will be unveiled in early October and is expected to reach global markets in early 2027. It will replace the company's ID.4 and ID.5.
Rather than give its electric vehicle a separate name, Volkswagen has decided to carry the familiar Tiguan name into the electric segment, because a large base of customers is already associated with it. More than 9.5 lakh units of the ID.4 and ID.5 have been sold since 2021, while more than 8.3 crore units of the Tiguan have been produced worldwide.
Importantly, the new ID. Tiguan will not replace the existing petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid Tiguan. Both models, with different powertrains, are expected to be sold at the same time. The ID. Tiguan will serve as the electric successor to the ID.4 and ID.5, while the older Tiguan will continue to be sold alongside it.
On design, the new electric SUV will get a design language different from the current Tiguan. According to Volkswagen, the SUV will have the road presence of a vehicle larger than its segment. Camouflaged prototypes are in final testing, and the production-spec design will be revealed in October.
After the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, Volkswagen is now linking its electric models to popular names through the ID. Tiguan. The company wants to make greater use of recognised model nameplates for electric vehicles in future, instead of separate names.
The new ID. Tiguan will emphasise a larger cabin, easier controls, new technology and a more premium design. This could make the SUV an important car among Volkswagen's next-generation electric models.
