Central Railway carried out a major cleanliness drive between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar in Mumbai on Sunday, October 4, 2026. During a mega block, a total of 1.68 lakh kg of silt, garbage and discarded material was collected under the 'Swachhata Rath' initiative.

The drive was held under the 'Swachhata Pakhwada' and 'Special Campaign 6.0'. A special four-hour block, from 11 am to 3 pm, is taken to clear silt and garbage that collects alongside the tracks. Special cleaning was carried out at CSMT, Masjid, Parel, Dadar and Matunga stations during the block.

Silt, discarded material and other remains were collected and removed from the designated spots along the rail route where garbage accumulates. The 1.68 lakh kg of waste was packed into about 28,000 sacks. The sacks were carried by a special EMU train named 'Swachhata Rath'. The waste was then taken through an authorised cleaning arrangement to processing and disposal centres.

A total of 881 workers took part in the drive, including trackmen, sanitation workers, housekeeping teams, supervisors and contract labourers. The emphasis was on removing the waste from the rail route immediately, preventing further accumulation and keeping station premises clean and healthy.

Silt and garbage along the tracks do not only affect the cleanliness of the surroundings but also choke drains that carry water away. This worsens waterlogging on rail routes during the rains. To reduce the problem, Central Railway took the mega block on Sunday. During the block, silt and garbage are collected and transported with the help of the 'Swachhata Rath' or 'muck special' train.

In the Mumbai division of Central Railway, a total of 1.91 lakh cubic metres of silt and garbage was cleared and disposed of between April and September 2026.

Efforts to keep rail routes and station premises clean are continuing through initiatives such as 'Swachhata Pakhwada', 'Swachhata Hi Seva' and 'Special Campaign 6.0'. The railway administration has appealed to citizens not to throw garbage on the rail routes and to protect the premises from pollution.
