A 43-year-old shepherd was killed and 17 sheep died when an unidentified truck hit them from behind on the Morwa-Padoli road in Chandrapur district. The truck driver fled with the vehicle after the accident.

The accident took place around 12.45 on Thursday, which the report gives as the 29th. It happened on the main road running from Morwa towards Padoli Chowk. Padoli police have registered a case against the unidentified driver.

The deceased has been identified as Padmakar Narayan Korewar, 43, a resident of Ramala village in Chamorshi tehsil of Gadchiroli district. He had been camping in the area with sheep for some days along with two companions. On the day of the accident, the three had set out on the main road from the Morwa side towards Padoli Chowk with a large flock.

A speeding truck came from behind and its driver, driving negligently, rammed into the flock and directly into the shepherd. The impact was so severe that Korewar suffered serious injuries to the head and other parts of the body. He fell on the road covered in blood and died on the spot before he could receive treatment. The 17 sheep walking with him also died there. A pall of gloom has settled over the area.

On receiving news of the accident, Police Inspector Sudhakar Kokode of Padoli police station reached the spot with his staff. Police promptly conducted a panchnama of the scene and sent the body for post-mortem.

After the collision, the truck driver neither stopped to help nor stayed at the spot. He fled, taking advantage of the darkness and traffic. Tracing him is a major challenge for the police. A case has been registered at Padoli police station against the unidentified driver under serious sections.

To arrest the accused quickly, police have begun closely going through footage from various CCTV cameras installed along the Morwa-Padoli road. Further investigation is under way under the supervision of Police Inspector Sudhakar Kokode.
