Nagpur: A professor at a well-known law institute in the country allegedly blackmailed and exploited a student for two years. Although the professor's conduct has come to light, his seniors are reportedly trying to shield him, and he has been sent on leave. Police are avoiding action on the ground that no complaint has been received, but students connected with the institute and their parents are deeply angry.
According to sources, the law student was trapped by the professor for two years. She belongs to a prominent business family in the city. The professor first got close to her on the pretext of guiding her. He then began to mislead her by telling her about religious and other matters. He tried to bring her closer by threatening to fail her in examinations. Besides speaking to her at the institute, he also called her to cafes in Dharampeth and other areas. Frightened, the student did not tell her family. As the family is in business, her parents are busy, and they too did not notice what was happening with their daughter.
In recent days her parents grew suspicious after noticing a change in her behaviour and customs. They took her into confidence and questioned her, and the truth emerged. Enraged, her family went to the institute two days ago, created a commotion and beat up the professor. The institute has been in turmoil since.
The professor is said to have worked at the law institute since 2017. He was earlier in Hyderabad and came to Nagpur in 2022. He has a wife and two children. He is also said to be friendly with a woman teacher at the institute. After the latest case became a talking point, the woman teacher reportedly tried to improve the professor's image before others.
Given talk that the professor had exploited students earlier as well, Bhandewadi police contacted institute officials and obtained information about him. The institute is said to be busy protecting its own image instead of bringing out the truth, and it has reportedly told police that this is the first allegation against the professor. The head of the department is said to have played a key role in protecting the professor. It has come to light that, on the department head's instructions, some people at the institute apologised to the student's parents and pleaded with them not to disclose the institute's name. On the evening of October 15, senior city police officers also inspected the institute premises and gathered information about the case.
Allegation of "love jihad"
Several parents are calling the latest case "love jihad", which has made the matter highly sensitive. According to sources, the Home Department has also issued guidelines to senior city police officers, and there is turmoil in the city police as well. Senior officers have also contacted the student's family. Fearing disorder, the education institute's premises are being monitored. Police officers are avoiding giving official information.
