A case has emerged from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh in which a woman is alleged to have attacked her husband's private parts with a knife while he slept at night. The husband was seriously injured and was admitted to hospital. Police have taken the woman into custody and are investigating.

The incident is said to have taken place in Zaid Garden, under the Lisadi Gate police station area of Meerut. The couple have been married for about seven and a half years. They were reportedly distressed at having no child, and tension between them is said to have stemmed from this. The husband claims his wife suspected him of befriending another woman, and that the two quarrelled repeatedly over it.

According to the husband, the atmosphere at home was tense when he returned on the night of the incident. While he was asleep that night, his wife attacked him with a knife, he alleges. He was injured and then taken to hospital. The incident has caused alarm in the area.

The injured man also says his wife gave him coffee that night. According to him, he became very drowsy after drinking it and was attacked after that. He said he was not fully conscious at the time of the attack. However, there is no independent confirmation so far of whether the coffee caused him to lose consciousness, or of exactly what happened during the attack. Police are looking into all of this.

The husband said the tension between them stemmed from the seven and a half years of marriage and the lack of a child. He claims his wife feared he would marry again and also suspected him of having a relationship with another woman. He said the couple had quarrelled over these issues before.

The wife's side of the story has not yet emerged.

Sangram Singh, the circle officer for the Kotwali area in Meerut, said a woman named Shabnam injured her husband with a knife on the night of October 8. According to police, the initial information indicates the cause was suspicion that the husband had a friendly relationship with another woman, which led to a quarrel.

Police said a case has been registered under the relevant sections and the woman has been taken into custody. The actual reason for the attack, the circumstances of the incident and the truth of the allegations are being investigated.
