The southwest monsoon is withdrawing from many parts of the country, but the weather has taken another turn. Rain is setting in across several states, from north to south India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain are likely in different parts of the country on Friday, October 9. Wind speeds could reach 70 km per hour in some places. A warning of heavy rain has been issued for 22 states.

Weather experts say a western disturbance is active over northwest India and is affecting the weather. Cyclonic circulation conditions also persist around Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, making conditions favourable for rain. Conditions have developed for the monsoon to withdraw from some more parts of east and northeast India, but rain is still likely in many states.

Heavy rain is possible at some places in Uttarakhand on October 9. In the south, heavy rain is also forecast for Kerala, Mahe, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Rain in hilly areas could cause landslides and traffic disruption, so people need to take precautions.

In Uttar Pradesh, rain with thunderstorms is expected in many districts, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Meerut and Agra. A rain warning is in place for 42 districts of the state, and winds could blow at up to 70 km per hour in some areas.

Delhi could see light to moderate rain over the next three days. Winds of around 20 km per hour are expected in some areas. The rain will bring down the temperature and offer some relief from the humidity.

Rain is likely in many districts of Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Darbhanga, where winds could reach 40 km per hour in places. Rain is also expected around Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain and Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, and winds in some areas could go up to 55 km per hour.

Light rain is likely in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Showers are also possible in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema and some other parts of south India. With the weather changing at the time of the monsoon's withdrawal, people are being urged to keep track of local forecasts and administration advisories.
