Nagpur: Armed robbers broke into a house, injured an elderly woman and looted her jewellery. The incident took place on the night of October 8 in Ahbab Colony in Anant Nagar, under Gittikhadan police station limits, and has spread fear among residents.

Raja Jamshed Sharif lives in Ahbab Colony with his 82-year-old mother, Rafiya Sharif. His elder brother lives a short distance from their house. Raja had gone out on the night of October 8, leaving his elderly mother alone at home. At around 11.30 pm, four accused entered the house. One or two of their accomplices are said to have kept watch outside.

The armed men tied up Rafiya Sharif as soon as they entered. When she resisted, they began beating her with a stick. She suffered deep injuries to her head and eye and was terrified. The robbers took the gold bangles from her wrists and the chain from her neck, and fled with about 11 tolas of jewellery.

Most neighbours were asleep at that late hour. Despite her injuries, Rafiya Sharif made her way to her elder son's apartment a short distance away and raised an alarm to tell them what had happened. The elder son then informed his younger brother and others. On learning of the incident, the Crime Branch and Gittikhadan police reached the spot.

Residents of the Anant Nagar area are gripped by fear and say they feel unsafe. Raja Sharif's house is in a residential colony, yet the criminals carried out the robbery with ease and escaped. It is suspected that they knew the elderly woman was alone at home, and the possibility that the robbers were known to the family is being raised.

Family members and residents are deeply angry that the robbers beat a helpless elderly woman. The stick is said to have broken during the assault. Residents have demanded that the accused be traced as soon as possible.

Police are tracing the accused on the basis of CCTV footage. Gittikhadan police have registered a case and begun an investigation.
