Toyota and Maruti Suzuki's partnership in the premium hatchback segment is always in the spotlight. Toyota has now launched the new Glanza facelift, priced from Rs 6.99 lakh to Rs 10.98 lakh ex-showroom. It costs up to Rs 1 lakh more than its twin, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.
Both cars get the same 83 hp petrol engine, the same mileage and a 3-year warranty. The extra money for the Glanza pays only for a different look and styling, not for any mechanical change. Like the Baleno, the new Glanza gets front seat ventilation and Level 2 ADAS features. A tyre-pressure monitor and 6 airbags are standard.
On the price gap, the petrol base variant differs by Rs 1 lakh between the two. In the manual variant above the base, the gap is Rs 71,000, and in the AMT variant it is Rs 81,000. In the mid variant, buyers pay Rs 73,000 more for the manual and Rs 83,000 more for the AMT.
The top petrol manual variant has the smallest gap, at Rs 49,000. In the top AMT variant the gap is Rs 99,000. In the top AMT variant with ADAS, the Glanza costs Rs 10.98 lakh and the Baleno Rs 9.99 lakh. The Glanza is also costlier in CNG variants. In the variants above the base, the gap is Rs 84,000 for the manual and Rs 99,000 for the AMT. In the mid CNG variant, the gap is Rs 76,000 and Rs 91,000 respectively. All these prices are ex-showroom.
The changes are only in the front section and the wheels. The Glanza gets a chrome strip joining the headlamps, a large honeycomb grille with a silver border, rectangular LED fog lamps and a dual-tone bumper. The Baleno has a grille with a triangular design, 3 chrome strips and a single-colour bumper. The headlamps of the two are nearly identical, while the design of the 16-inch alloy wheels differs. The rear is almost the same.
The cabins of the two cars are identical. They have a layered dashboard, a free-standing touchscreen and physical switches for climate control. The difference is only in the colour theme and seat upholstery. Both get ventilation for the front seats and Level 2 ADAS safety features.
Both have a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 83 hp of power and 112 Nm of torque. The CNG version produces 70 hp and 102 Nm. Both offer a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT.
According to the company's claims, the petrol variants return 23.80 kmpl in the manual and 24.77 kmpl in the AMT. In CNG, the manual returns 33.61 km/kg and the AMT 34.47 km/kg. Both cars carry a standard warranty of 3 years or 1,00,000 km.
If price matters most, the Maruti Baleno is the better option, as it offers the same engine, mileage and warranty at a lower price. But buyers who prefer Toyota's look and design, or want to buy from a Toyota showroom, can consider the Glanza facelift. Buyers should decide only after getting an on-road price quotation for both cars, as the on-road price can also differ with insurance and taxes.
