Toyota has launched the updated model of its hatchback Glanza in India. The Glanza facelift starts at Rs 6.99 lakh ex-showroom. The new car gets a 1.2-litre petrol engine, a revised front design and several new features. A CNG option is available along with petrol, and for the first time the CNG engine is offered with an AMT gearbox.

The car comes in five variants: E, S, G, V and V (O). Ex-showroom prices are Rs 6.99 lakh for E, Rs 7.71 lakh for S, Rs 8.73 lakh for G, Rs 9.99 lakh for V and Rs 10.49 lakh for V (O).

The biggest change is in the engine. It now has the Z12E-type 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine used in the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. On petrol it produces 83hp of power and 112Nm of torque. It is paired with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual (AMT) transmission. The older model had a four-cylinder engine; the new engine produces 7hp less power and 1Nm less torque, but fuel efficiency has been improved.

According to the company, the petrol manual returns 23.80 km per litre and the AMT 24.77 km per litre. The older model returned 22.35 km per litre in manual and 22.94 km per litre in AMT. The petrol engine also has an idle start-stop function, which helps cut unnecessary engine use when the vehicle is stationary.

On CNG, the same engine produces 70hp of power and 102Nm of torque. The CNG variant gets a 5-speed manual and a new 5-speed AMT gearbox. Compared with the older engine, power in the CNG model is 7hp lower but torque is up by 4.5Nm. The company claims mileage has also improved, to 33.61 km per kg for CNG manual and 34.47 km per kg for CNG AMT. The older CNG manual returned 30.61 km per kg. CNG buyers who want to avoid changing gears now have the AMT option.

Most of the design changes are at the front. The grille is larger than before, with satin-finish trim on both sides. The radar module required for Level 2 ADAS is also fitted at the front. The headlamp design is unchanged, but the housing for the LED fog lamps is new. The Toyota logo is now on a plastic trim below the bonnet, and a shark-fin antenna is provided. There are no major changes to the sides and rear. The alloy wheels, chrome door handles, chrome window trim, wraparound LED tail-lamps, roof spoiler, rear wiper and washer remain as before. Two new colours, Digital Teal Green and Bluish Black, have been added.

The car is 3,990 mm long, 1,745 mm wide and 1,530 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,520 mm. Ground clearance and boot space have not yet been disclosed. The Glanza and Baleno are built on the same platform, so boot space of about 318 litres, as in the Baleno, is expected. In the CNG model, the tank leaves less luggage space.

The cabin retains the black and beige theme. The dashboard has not changed much, but the seat upholstery has been improved and the seats are now leatherette. Features include ventilation and cooling vents for the front seats, a wireless phone charger, a Clarion sound system with four speakers and two tweeters, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The car also has a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a monochrome head-up display, an analogue instrument cluster with a coloured multi-information display, automatic climate control, AC vents for rear passengers, a height-adjustable driver seat and USB ports.

For safety, there is Level 2 ADAS and six airbags. A 360-degree camera, hill-hold control and ISOFIX anchors for child seats continue from the older model.

The car will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, i20 N Line and Tata Altroz. The Baleno is priced at Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh ex-showroom, the Hyundai i20 and i20 N Line at Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11.64 lakh, and the Tata Altroz at Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.90 lakh.
