After completing a BTech or BE, the biggest question before every student is what to do next. Apart from looking for a job, there are two main routes for higher studies: MTech and MBA. Students are often confused about which course offers better scope and a fat salary.
According to education experts and recent placement reports, both courses have their own importance. A student's decision should rest on what their career goal is and whether they are more interested in technical skills or management skills.
For those who want to advance in their own engineering branch, such as computer science, mechanical, civil or electrical, MTech is a good option. The course is focused entirely on technical expertise, research and the development of new technology.
An MTech opens the way to work in research and development wings. Jobs as senior engineers, data scientists and coding experts in tech companies are also possible. MTech degree holders are also in great demand in reputed government and public sector undertakings such as ISRO, DRDO and BHEL.
On the other hand, an engineering student who wants to move away from technical work into business management, leadership, marketing or finance is considered best served by an MBA. An MBA alongside an engineering degree carries considerable weight in the corporate world, because companies want professionals who understand technology and can also run a business.
Engineers who do an MBA at the country's top business schools, such as the IIMs, get direct placement in senior roles such as product manager, consultant, investment banker and business analyst. In the corporate sector, the starting package for young MBA graduates can range from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 25 lakh a year, which can rise to crores with experience.
On direct earnings and salary packages, the MBA appears to have a slight edge, both at the start and over the long term. Management professionals in the corporate sector are responsible for growing the business and taking decisions, so they get promotions and hikes faster.
However, students who master modern technologies such as AI, machine learning, robotics and data science get an equal or higher package even after an MTech. Doing an MTech at a top IIT or NIT, rather than at an ordinary college, gives the career the right momentum. In an MBA too, the brand value of the college plays the biggest role in deciding the salary.
