Every year lakhs of young people dream of admission to the country's top engineering institutes, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) or the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). While preparing for JEE Main and JEE Advanced, students and their parents are left with some questions. Are both institutes government-run? How much do their fees differ? And which one offers better job opportunities, that is, placements?

For those preparing for JEE 2027, it is important to understand the basics of IITs and NITs before the examination. There are fine differences between the two, from the system of study, annual expenses and government concessions to campus placement figures.

First, whether both are government institutes. IITs and NITs are both autonomous, centrally funded institutes under the Union Ministry of Education. Both have been given the status of Institutes of National Importance.

The IITs began in the 1950s. For admission, a candidate must clear JEE Main and then secure a very good rank in JEE Advanced. The NITs were earlier called Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) and were later given NIT status. Admission to them is based on the JEE Main merit list and all-India rank.

Now to fees. The total fees at the two kinds of institutes do not differ by a great deal. A four-year B.Tech course at an IIT, including tuition fee, hostel and other expenses, costs roughly Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh. At an NIT, the total cost of four years of study generally comes to around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.

Candidates from the General, EWS or OBC-NCL categories whose family's annual income is below Rs 1 lakh get a 100% tuition fee waiver at both IITs and NITs. Children of families with an annual income between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh get a two-thirds (about 66.6%) waiver on tuition fees. For students in the SC, ST and persons with disabilities (PwD) categories, the tuition fee is zero.

On placement packages and international jobs, the IITs appear to have a slight edge over the NITs. At the country's top and older IITs, such as IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur and Kharagpur, the average annual salary package is between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. Big global companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Meta and Amazon come for campus selection, and there are also more opportunities for postings abroad.

The top NITs, such as NIT Tiruchirappalli, Surathkal and Warangal, also perform strongly. The average package at NITs is Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh a year. Large multinational companies from India and abroad also come to recruit in large numbers at the top NITs.
