Bhandewadi police have arrested Aman alias Nato Kaitwar, the man they describe as the alleged main conspirator in the murder of Ganesh Borkar, from Uttar Pradesh. Kaitwar had been on the run for about three months, ever since the killing in Nagpur.
Police say the crime took place on the night of July 2 in the Hanuman Nagar area, which comes under the Bhandewadi police station. Ganesh alias Gurudev Borkar, 45, was set upon by three masked men whose identities were not known at the time. They struck him with sharp weapons, and he died of the injuries.
An investigation was started to identify the attackers and find the motive. As it moved ahead, the trail led police to an alleged plot involving people known to the victim. Four persons were taken into custody earlier: Borkar's wife Manisha Borkar, Abhishek alias Dadu Sakhare, Rohit Borkar and a minor. Kaitwar, however, could not be found and stayed at large while the search for him went on.
Police later got confidential word that he was hiding in Uttar Pradesh. Acting on that tip, a team from Bhandewadi police travelled to the neighbouring state and picked him up. He was then brought before a court, which remanded him in police custody till October 16.
Investigators are questioning him now. They want to understand how the plan was hatched, how it was put into effect and what part each of the other accused played. They also hope the questioning will clarify how the earlier accused were linked with Kaitwar, and how far his own alleged role extended.
According to the police version, Ganesh Borkar and Manisha were embroiled in a family dispute and had been living apart. Police allege that Manisha, after receiving a death threat from her husband, conspired with her associates to have him killed. The inquiry has also reportedly turned up the use of a contract (supari) to carry out the murder, and officers are looking into the alleged payment.
Police stress that all this is part of their investigation and will have to be established through evidence and in court. With the alleged mastermind now in custody, they plan to piece together the entire conspiracy and verify the role attributed to every accused. The probe is continuing, and more details may emerge from Kaitwar's interrogation.
