A video of the Bhokar-Bhaisa checkpost in Nanded district is being claimed to have gone viral on social media. It is alleged that the video shows money being collected from truck drivers travelling from one state to another. Following the matter, discussion has begun over the functioning of the Nanded Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The regional transport department is responsible for preventing illegal passenger transport, overloaded trucks, the carriage of illegal goods and smuggling. Allegations of taking money at a checkpost of this very department have raised questions about its working.

Checkpoints operate on the Bhokar-Bhaisa route on the Maharashtra-Telangana border to inspect vehicles. Many goods vehicles bound for different states pass through this route every day. The agencies concerned therefore carry the important responsibility of keeping watch on the carriage of illegal minerals, smuggling of narcotics, transport of banned goods and vehicles that break rules.

On the basis of the viral video, it is being alleged that money was being taken from truck drivers instead of vehicles being checked strictly. The allegations have raised questions about the checkpost's inspection process and the way the regional transport department works.

Nanded district shares borders with three states: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. As a result, a large number of vehicles pass through the district's inter-state roads. The role of the regional transport department's checkpoints is therefore extremely important.

It is necessary to check vehicle papers, permits, carriage of goods beyond capacity and compliance with other rules. The agencies concerned are expected to remain vigilant to curb illegal transport and smuggling. But if allegations of collecting money are made at the checkpost itself, serious questions can arise over the transparency of this system.

In connection with the viral video, the name of RTO officer Amit Deulkar is being claimed to have come up. However, an official inquiry into the alleged incident shown in the video, the response of the officials concerned and the extent of truth in the allegations need to be confirmed separately. The allegations cannot be considered proved merely because a video has gone viral.

Attention is now on whether any official clarification has come from the department concerned, whether an inquiry has begun and what action will be taken on the alleged collection of money.

Checkposts exist to stop illegal transport and enforce rules. When a charge of alleged irregularity emerges there, a fair inquiry is therefore important. If anyone is found guilty after the truth of the viral video is tested, action according to rules may be necessary.

For now, the allegations of alleged money collection at the Bhokar-Bhaisa checkpost have raised questions about the functioning of the Nanded RTO. It will be important to see what stand the administration takes and what the inquiry finds.
