Cricket matches for boys under 16 have been under way at Kolambe for the past three days. A 20-member team from a Kalyan cricket academy had arrived to take part in the tournament. When the team's match ended, Saurabh Jha and Shubham Yadav went in the afternoon towards a pool near the cricket ground. Other teammates were with them.
The pool lies in a forest area and is considered extremely dangerous. According to information available, swimming in it is prohibited. Even so, Saurabh and Shubham got into the water. Both jumped into the pool, but were not seen on the surface afterwards. The preliminary assessment is that they drowned because they did not know how deep the water was.
The boys with them raised an alarm as soon as they saw this. Hearing the shouts, people from the vicinity rushed to the spot, but it was too late. When the two were pulled out of the water, there were injury marks on their faces. The preliminary assessment is that they may have died after striking a rock while jumping. The exact cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem and further investigation.
Purnagad police reached the spot on receiving news of the incident. Police took custody of the bodies and sent them to the district hospital for post-mortem. The relatives of both have been informed. Police are investigating further.
Everyone in the area is in shock at the deaths of two minors who had come to Ratnagiri to play cricket. Their teammates and local residents are grieving over the tragedy.
