Mandangad: The Sindhuratna Samruddha scheme is being implemented for the all-round development of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The scheme is based on the development of tourism, fisheries, horticulture and self-help groups. Its next phase, Sindhuratna 2.0, is currently under way, creating a major opportunity to spur the development of both districts.
The need is being expressed for tourism to get greater priority under the scheme. Various initiatives are being taken to promote tourism in the districts under Sindhuratna. Beaches that have received Blue Flag certification are being developed for tourism, and the idea of caravan tourism has also emerged. This is likely to give Konkan tourism a new direction. However, the scope of these initiatives needs to be widened so that as many tourist spots as possible are developed.
If concepts such as the presentation of forts and historical sites, orchard and farm tourism, adventure and sports tourism, water sports in the sea, scuba diving and paragliding are promoted, tourists may stay longer. Local hotels, transport, small industries, women's self-help groups and local producers could also benefit financially.
Tourism holds a large economy. As Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg both have natural, cultural and historical strengths, they have great potential for tourism development. If effective schemes such as Sindhuratna give direction to this potential while long-term planning, necessary infrastructure and a separate tourism policy are brought together, Konkan tourism could get a major platform.
To use the full potential of tourism in Konkan, a separate, dedicated tourism policy is needed. Kerala and Goa have given tourism separate policy priority and have boosted their local economies as a result. On similar lines, if a tourism policy is drawn up for Konkan keeping in mind local needs and features, new employment opportunities can be created.
While promoting Konkan's traditional food culture such as rice and fish, effective national and global branding of Hapus mango and cashew can be done. Festivals of mango, cashew and local food would connect tourists with Konkani culture. Local folk arts, traditional occupations and cultural heritage also need encouragement.
