Families planning a day out would do well to put Ratnagiri on their list. The area is known for its unhurried character, natural beauty and wild fruit. Visitors can see beaches, waterfalls and green forests.
For those looking to escape the daily rush and crowds, Ratnagiri is a good choice. Its old mansions and the greenery all around bring a sense of calm. Families can visit at leisure. Forts by the sea, blue waters, sunsets, beaches popular for photography, and old buildings and museums for history enthusiasts are all found in one place.
Jaigad Fort is in Jaigad village, about 40 km from the city. Built in the 16th century, it is among the area's notable sites. Spread over about 13 acres, the fort was built by the Sultan of Bijapur at the confluence of the Shastri river and the Arabian Sea. It is now in a ruined state, but the surrounding area is still worth visiting. Visitors can also see Angre port and a lighthouse nearby.
The second spot is Aare-Ware beach. Almost everyone knows Ganpatipule, and visitors to Ratnagiri usually go there. On the way is a beach 8 km from Ganpatipule. The two beaches, near the villages of Aare and Ware, lie on either side of a single hill. Visitors can watch the sunset and take photographs.
The third is Thibaw Palace, a must-visit for history lovers. The three-storey palace, spread over 27 acres, is built in the Brahmi style and is surrounded by gardens. Inside are wooden floors, glass windows and old craftsmanship. The palace has been turned into a museum that holds many artefacts. Thibaw Point also offers a view of Ratnagiri.
