Searches with bomb squad and sniffer dogs found nothing suspicious after a threat naming Babbar Khalsa and pro-Khalistan groups covered Nagpur among several cities.
Nagpur police were put on alert on Monday after a threat to carry out bomb blasts in major cities across the country. Following a threat to target the District Court and a metro station, police beefed up security at both premises. A thorough search was carried out with the help of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and sniffer dogs. No suspicious object was found during the checks, and police breathed a sigh of relief.
The threat was reportedly sent by email in the name of Babbar Khalsa and pro-Khalistan terrorist organisations, warning of blasts at metro stations and district courts in several major cities. Nagpur was among the cities named in the alert. According to the threat, blasts were feared at the metro station at 9.11 am and at the District Court at 3.11 pm.
On receiving news of the threat, Nagpur police went on alert. Senior officers instructed police officers and all station house officers to tighten security arrangements. Police deployment at the two sensitive premises was then increased and they were searched closely.
The metro station and the District Court complex were checked for about two hours with the help of the BDDS and sniffer dogs. Lawyers were moved out of the District Court complex. Police searched every possible spot but found no suspicious object anywhere. Security agencies then breathed a sigh of relief. However, police have not taken the threat lightly and are staying vigilant.
With Diwali near, crowds are building up in the city's markets, and the bomb threat has added to police concern. As a precaution, all station house officers have been told to keep security strong in their areas, step up surveillance at sensitive places and act immediately on any suspicious activity. No suspicious object has been found in the investigation so far, but Nagpur police are exercising extra caution in view of the threat.
