Work on the Amrit Bharat redevelopment of Ajni station in Nagpur is advancing on both sides, with girders placed over the tracks for a 72-metre-wide elevated concourse.

Nagpur: Redevelopment of Ajni railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is picking up speed. Major civil works are under way on both the east and west sides of the station. When the project is complete, Ajni will become a modern satellite terminal for Nagpur. Passengers will get better facilities, the station will be easier to reach, and there will be a direct connection to the metro network.

On the east side, the G+3 station building is nearly ready. Work on the ticket counters on the ground floor is complete, while finishing and facade work is still on. Once this new terminal is operational, passengers will be able to enter the station directly from the east. This will ease the difficulty of reaching the station and make entry and exit simpler.

The biggest part of the entire redevelopment is a 72-metre-wide elevated air-conditioned concourse. It has been designed as the main area for passengers to move through, wait and rest, serving all platforms.

According to officials, construction of the elevated concourse is well advanced. As of August 27, 2026, heavy steel girders had been placed over the railway tracks. Officials said the first level of foundation work has been completed, while slab construction and roof launching are in progress. When complete, the concourse will span all the platforms. Passengers will be able to move easily within the station and will have an open waiting area that protects them from the weather.

Pawan Kumar Patil, chief project officer of the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), said the elevated concourse is the heart of the Ajni redevelopment project. Patil said, "Level 1 of the foundation is complete, and slab and roof launching work is going on. Once operational, it will connect both the east and west sides and give passengers world-class facilities. Ajni will emerge as a major satellite terminal for Nagpur."

Three platforms are currently in use. According to project details, work is under way on four more platforms, two on each side of the existing arrangement. So that passenger services continue without interruption during the redevelopment, trains are currently being operated from the west side through Platforms 1 and 2.

Part of the girder launching on the west side is still pending because the underground road, a road underbridge (RUB), is being built in front of Ajni station. Officials said the remaining launching work will be taken up after the road project is completed. Coordination between the railway construction and the road structure is an important part of the redevelopment, as the completed facilities are meant to improve access to the station from both sides.

The G+1 station building on the west side is also under construction. It is being built as a connected facility with Congress Nagar metro station, giving a direct interface between Indian Railways and Nagpur Metro. This link is expected to make it easier for passengers to switch between rail and metro, and to help those coming from different parts of the city reach Ajni.

With separate entries on both sides, a large elevated concourse, additional platforms and metro connectivity, passengers are expected to have a much better experience at the station after redevelopment. As a satellite terminal, Ajni will share the load with Nagpur's main railway station and play a major role in the city's rail traffic. As construction advances, the focus is on completing the major structural components while keeping train operations running without interruption.
