Nagpur Police have solved the robbery of gold and silver jewellery worth about Rs 40 lakh from a jeweller's shop in the MIDC police station area. According to police, four alleged members of an inter-state gang have been arrested from Bareilly, Noida and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil shared the details at a press conference on October 14. A Fortuner car allegedly used in the crime has been seized, while the search for the remaining gang members continues.
Police said the robbery took place on October 3, 2026, between about 4.40 pm and 4.55 pm on Hingna Road, opposite Mahakali Bar, under MIDC police station limits. Rakesh Subhash Dhomne, 39, a resident of Gajanan Nagar, MIDC, runs a gold and silver shop there named Dhomne Jewellers. His 24-year-old employee, Shubham Khemraj Hadge, was in the shop at the time.
Police said four unidentified men entered the shop in broad daylight. They threatened Shubham with something that looked like a pistol and warned they would kill him. They then forcibly took the gold and silver jewellery kept in the shop and assaulted Shubham before fleeing.
The stolen jewellery is said to weigh about 350 grams and is valued at about Rs 40 lakh. On the jeweller's complaint, MIDC police registered a case under Sections 309(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Given the seriousness of the case, MIDC police and the Nagpur Crime Branch began separate investigations. The accused had fled after the crime, so identifying them was the biggest challenge. Police collected recordings from CCTV cameras at the spot and nearby, and went through about 300 to 400 videos, looking at the accused's movements, likely escape routes and other leads.
Along with technical analysis, police identified the accused and traced their likely hideouts with the help of artificial intelligence tools and circumstantial evidence. As the probe progressed, it emerged that the accused had left Maharashtra. Two special Crime Branch teams were then sent to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Nangare Patil, the teams pursued the accused continuously for seven days and conducted raids in different states.
According to the police press note, the two teams kept their identity secret and carried out inquiries in local areas for four days. They gathered technical information and took the help of local police, collecting details of the accused's likely locations, movements and contacts. A third Crime Branch team was also sent to another state when needed. Searches were carried out at different places in coordination with local police, and the accused's hideouts were identified on the basis of the information and they were taken into custody.
Police first detained Abhishek Singh Thakur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and questioned him at length. According to police, the questioning yielded information about others allegedly involved in the robbery, after which the investigation team stepped up the search. The other three alleged gang members were detained from different cities of Uttar Pradesh: two in Noida and one in Meerut. In all, four accused have been arrested in the Rs 40 lakh jewellery robbery case.
According to the police press note, the arrested accused are: Abhishek Singh Thakur, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; Jairam alias Joginder Ashok Singh Thakur, 19, Noida, Uttar Pradesh; Shubhankit Nileshkumar Chaturvedi, 22, Noida, Uttar Pradesh; and Rajan Sami Sharma, 29, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
Police said all four were allegedly involved in the crime. The press note describes them as habitual offenders with criminal records. Their roles, the recovery of the stolen jewellery and the involvement of other associates are being investigated.
The Fortuner allegedly used in the crime, registration number MH-49-B-9192, has been seized. Facts related to the seized vehicle and the accused's movements are being examined. Efforts also continue to recover the stolen gold and silver and to establish the roles of the others involved. Police are also looking into why the accused chose this shop in Nagpur and which routes they took to flee after the robbery.
Nagpur Crime Branch also received help from police in other states. The press note specifically mentions the assistance of Head Constable Sachin Jha of the SWAT team in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, and Sub-Inspector Neeraj Pawar of Saharanpur, along with policemen Harendra, Amit Chikara, Jogendra and Vivek Rana.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil, Joint Commissioner Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajendra Dabhade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Deepak Agrawal and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Vaibhav Jadhav. Crime Branch Police Inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh, Assistant Police Inspectors Chetan Borkhede, Nitin Chulpar and Rajaram Jadhav, and other officers and staff also contributed.
The investigation is not yet complete. Police are searching for the remaining gang members and continue their efforts to recover the jewellery worth about Rs 40 lakh and to establish the exact role of each accused. More details about the alleged conspiracy and the gang's network are expected once the investigation is complete.
