Four held in Uttar Pradesh for Rs 40 lakh jewellery shop robbery in Nagpur

Nagpur Police's crime branch arrested four members of an interstate gang from Bareilly, Noida and Meerut for the armed robbery at a jeweller's shop in MIDC.

The Nagpur Police crime branch has solved the robbery of gold and silver jewellery worth about Rs 40 lakh, committed at gunpoint at a jeweller's shop within the limits of MIDC police station in Nagpur. Four accused belonging to an interstate gang were arrested from different cities in Uttar Pradesh. Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil announced the action at a press conference on October 14.

According to the police, the incident took place on October 3, 2026, between about 4.40 pm and 4.55 pm, in front of Mahakali Bar on Hingna Road. Rakesh Subhash Dhomane (39), a resident of Gajanan Nagar, MIDC, runs a shop called Dhomane Jewellers there, dealing in the purchase and sale of gold and silver jewellery. His employee Shubham Khemraj Hadge (24) was in the shop at the time.

Four unidentified persons entered the shop at that time. They threatened Shubham with an object resembling a gun, warned they would kill him and forcibly snatched the gold and silver jewellery in the shop. Shubham was also beaten before they fled. The stolen jewellery weighed about 350 grams and was valued at about Rs 40 lakh, it was said.

On the shop owner's complaint, a case was registered at MIDC police station under Sections 309(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Considering the seriousness of the crime, MIDC police and the Nagpur crime branch began parallel investigations. The accused had fled after the incident, making their identification a major challenge for the police.

Recordings from CCTV cameras at the spot and in the surrounding area were collected, and about 300 to 400 clips were examined. The movements of the accused and their likely escape routes were studied. Along with technical analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) technology was also used, and circumstantial evidence was linked to trace the accused.

On learning that the accused were outside Maharashtra, two special crime branch teams left for Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. According to the press note, the teams kept their identity secret for four days while investigating in the local areas and took help from local police. A third team was also sent to another state as needed. The police succeeded after seven days of continuous effort.

Police first detained the accused Abhishek Singh Thakur from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. Intensive questioning of him yielded information about the other accomplices in the crime, the police said. Three more members of the gang were then detained, two from Noida and one from Meerut. In all, four accused have been arrested.

According to the police press note, the arrested are Abhishek Singh Thakur (Bareilly), Jayram alias Joginder Ashok Singh Thakur (19, Noida), Shubhankit Nileshkumar Chaturvedi (22, Noida) and Rajan Sami Sharma (29, Meerut). The police have said all of them were allegedly involved in the crime. The press note describes them as habitual offenders with criminal records.

The police have seized the Fortuner car used in the crime, which was said to bear registration number MH-49-B-9192. Investigation is continuing into the exact role of each accused, recovery of the stolen jewellery and the involvement of other accomplices. Police are searching for the other members of the gang.

Police from other states also cooperated in the operation. The press note mentions the special assistance of Head Constable Sachin Jha of the SWAT team at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, SI Neeraj Pawar of Saharanpur, and police personnel Harendra, Amit Chikara, Jogendra and Vivek Rana.
