Students who want to study engineering after Class 12 will have heard of the IIITs. These colleges teach courses such as computer science, IT and AI. A good rank is needed for admission. Each college has its own cutoff, and it changes every year. Here is a look at five prominent IIITs and how admission works at each.
First, IIIT Hyderabad, counted among the country's well-known technical institutes. Courses such as computer science and electronics are very popular here. Admission is possible on the basis of JEE Main scores. Some courses also admit students through entrance examinations such as UGEE and SPEC. A good rank is needed to get into CSE through JEE Main. According to 2025 figures, the rank needed is around 1,000.
IIIT Bengaluru is also known for computer science and technology programmes. It offers courses such as a four-year B.Tech and a five-year integrated M.Tech. The closing rank for B.Tech CSE in 2025 was reported to be around 6,942. However, ranks differ from course to course.
IIIT Allahabad is in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The college is known for IT and computer-related courses. Courses such as information technology and electronics and communication engineering are taught here. A good JEE Main rank is needed for admission, and seats are then allotted through JoSAA counselling. The cutoff changes every year, and the course and category the student seeks admission in are also considered.
The institute in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, is formally named "Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management" (ABV-IIITM Gwalior). Management-related courses are taught here along with technology. The JEE Main rank is important for admission. Cutoffs for courses such as CSE and IT change every year here too.
Lastly, IIIT Lucknow, a popular institute among engineering aspirants. It offers courses in areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. A JEE Main score is required for admission, and seats are then allotted through counselling. The rank at which a student gets admission depends on the course, the category and the counselling round.
