The shadow of drought has not lifted from Maharashtra, and now there is fresh concern about next year's monsoon as well. The state government has declared Trigger-1 drought in 265 talukas of the state. Nearly 75 percent of the state is facing drought-like conditions, and people are bearing the brunt of it. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said at a press conference in Nagpur that if the effect of El Nino continues, the state could once again face a rainfall crisis. This is feared to directly affect farming, drinking water and other water arrangements in the coming days.

Fadnavis said clearly, "We have to be prepared for every kind of situation." He said the current El Nino has not yet reached its peak. Experts estimate it could peak around February, after which its effect is likely to gradually decrease.

El Nino-like conditions form due to a rise in sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean, which can affect weather across the world. It is also feared to affect India's monsoon, which is why this issue is particularly significant for Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, the state government declared Trigger-1 drought in 265 talukas on Saturday. With the drought declaration, the way has been cleared to implement relief measures in the affected areas. The government will now have to pay greater attention to farming and drinking water issues.

While a large part of the state is in the grip of drought, flood-like conditions have arisen in the Bhamragad area of Gadchiroli due to heavy rain in Chhattisgarh. Several villages have been cut off, and some people have been moved to safe locations with the help of rescue teams. Fadnavis said the floodwater is expected to recede by this afternoon and the situation will come under control.

While a large part of the state is reeling under drought, some areas are facing flood-like conditions. Given this shifting weather pattern, Maharashtra is set to face a major challenge over water management in the coming days.
