Mamata Banerjee demands Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee accused the Chief Election Commissioner of stealing votes and said the Opposition's agitation would go on until he resigns.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has levelled serious allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. "Gyanesh Kumar is a thief, he stole votes, he burnt EVMs, he must be punished. He must resign," she said.
The INDIA bloc held a joint press conference in New Delhi today, September 30. Opposition leaders put forward their positions one after another. Banerjee criticised the Election Commission and the Chief Election Commissioner. She said the bloc had been agitating against electoral malpractice for a long time, but that their conduct had now been exposed.
According to Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav had raised the issue of vote theft in Bihar. She claimed that by stealing votes the BJP won in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Bihar in 2026 and plundered Bengal.
She went on: "You know, we brought people here. We went to the Election Commission. We went to the Supreme Court too. We knocked on every door. But it is now out in the open that Gyanesh Kumar is a thief. He stole votes, burnt EVMs, hijacked EVMs and rigged the counting." She demanded that he resign immediately. She also said that democracy must be protected and the safety of the people ensured.
Banerjee said voting is a constitutional right and that people's right must be protected. She said this was a responsibility towards society. She also asked what would happen to the country if people did not vote or if their votes were stolen.
She warned that if Kumar did not resign, the agitation could go very far. She said it would reach from the earth to the sky and from the sun to the moon. She added that all that was needed was to fight together.
Banerjee said the Opposition's agitation would continue until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns. She also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said the Opposition's movement to save democracy would go on for a long time, and appealed to students, young people and journalists to support it.
