Woman, 60, killed in tiger attack in Chandrapur's Mohurli range, 32nd such death this year

A 60-year-old woman was killed in a tiger attack in the Agarzari area of the Mohurli forest range in Chandrapur district. The incident took place around noon on October 5, 2026, and has created widespread fear in Agarzari and the surrounding areas.

The deceased was identified as Mandabai Suryabhan Mangam, 60, a resident of Agarzari. It is the 32nd death this year in human-wildlife conflict. So many deaths in a single year have deepened fear among local people.

According to the information available, Mangam was working on her own farm, Survey No. 10/4, adjoining Reserve Forest Compartment No. 187 in the Agarzari-2 beat, when a tiger lying in wait attacked her suddenly and killed her on the spot.

On receiving news of the incident, Mohurli Range Forest Officer Santosh Thipe, Durgapur police station officer Shri Shegaonkar and regional forest staff reached the spot at once. They conducted the panchnama at the site and sent the body to the district hospital in Chandrapur for post-mortem.

Following the incident, the administration immediately gave an ex gratia payment of Rs 50,000 at the spot to the woman's husband, Suryabhan Laxman Mangam.

The forest department has installed camera traps in the area to monitor the tiger's movements. Forest staff are also sounding an alert in the village. The department has appealed to villagers to take special care while working in fields and in the forest area.

Range Forest Officer Santosh Thipe is conducting further investigation into the incident.
