Sangvi police say they arrested Vishnu Tanaji Kumbhar within hours of two severed human legs being found in a sack of roadside garbage in Pimple Gurav.
Pimpri Chinchwad, November 7: Two human legs, severed below the knee, were found on Friday in a sack dumped by the roadside in the Pimple Gurav area of Pimpri Chinchwad. Sangvi police say they solved the case within a few hours. According to police, the accused is Vishnu Tanaji Kumbhar. He is alleged to have killed his friend Anil Khade after a quarrel and cut up the body to destroy evidence.
The matter came to light at about 11 am on Friday. Two garbage collectors, Krushna Lot and Omkar Kale, were collecting waste on the road between Ramkrishna Mangal Karyalay and Katepuram Chowk. They noticed blood stains on a sack lying among the garbage. They first thought it held a dog's legs, but were stunned to see two human legs when they opened it. Panic followed in the area.
Sangvi police reached the spot on being informed and began an investigation. A search of the sack turned up the cover of a SIM card. The mobile number printed on it became an important lead for the investigators. Through this number, police reached the family of the deceased, Anil Khade, and Kumbhar was later identified as a suspect.
When a police team reached Kumbhar's house, it was locked and the accused was absent. Police broke the lock and entered, and a foul smell came from inside. A search of the house turned up Khade's body, and the killing came to light.
According to the police investigation, Khade and Kumbhar were friends and had sat drinking together on Thursday night. A quarrel broke out between them. Kumbhar is alleged to have then struck Khade on the head with an iron object, leaving him unconscious. He is then alleged to have cut off both of Khade's legs below the knee with a sickle.
Police say that in an attempt to destroy evidence, the accused allegedly stuffed the severed legs into a sack and threw it into the garbage by the roadside between Ramkrishna Mangal Karyalay and Katepuram Chowk.
The SIM card cover found in the sack proved the most important piece of evidence in the case. With its help, police unravelled the case and arrested Kumbhar within a few hours.
The operation was carried out by a Sangvi police team under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Atole, Assistant Commissioner of Police Manisha Kadam and Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Koli.
