The agreement paves the way for a modern bus terminal at the original Shivajinagar site, with the tender expected in December and construction to take three to four years.

The original ST bus stand at Shivajinagar will be redeveloped into the largest modern bus terminal in Maharashtra. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project was signed on Wednesday between the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Mahametro. The details of the agreement emerged on November 5, 2026.

The proposed project is expected to cost Rs 825 crore. It will create an integrated transport hub linking ST buses, Pune Metro, railways, PMPML buses and autorickshaws.

The MoU was signed at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole and other officials were present.

The project will come up on 15,400 square metres of MSRTC land at Shivajinagar. Mahametro has already built an underground metro station on part of the site. A modern bus terminal and commercial facilities will be built on the remaining area of about 10,500 square metres. The project will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, on a long-term lease.

According to Shirole, the project will have a modern waiting area for passengers, bus parking, a separate workshop and commercial units. The tender is expected to be issued in December, while the actual construction will take three to four years.

Calling the agreement a major success, Shirole wrote on X, "For the past five years, I had been pursuing relentlessly the redevelopment and restoration of the Shivajinagar bus stand at its original site." He said bringing the facility back to Shivajinagar had remained his top priority.

The MLA said the integrated hub would benefit more than one lakh passengers every day. Connectivity will also improve for travellers heading to Khandesh, Marathwada, Vidarbha and Mumbai. He said, "Most importantly, this project will bring together MSRTC, Pune Metro, railways, PMPML and autorickshaw services, and create a major multimodal transport hub in the heart of Pune."

The Shivajinagar bus stand was shifted on December 30, 2019, to the Aarey Dairy premises in Wakadewadi to make way for the underground metro station. Bus services from the temporary site began on January 1, 2020. The shift was initially meant to last three years. Because the redevelopment was delayed, however, passengers have had to use the temporary site for nearly seven years. Complaints about dust, heat and inadequate facilities have continued during this period.

After redevelopment, the bus stand will return to its original site in a modern form. However, passengers will have to wait until the tender process and construction are completed, and only then will the facility open.
