Pune Metro has barred cycles of every type and size on the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line, and station staff have been told to stop cyclists entering the premises.
Commuters on Pune Metro's Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line will now have to make separate arrangements for their bicycles. The company that runs the metro has banned bicycles on the whole of Line 3. The restriction applies to bicycles of every type and size.
Puneri Metro announced the decision through its official social media accounts. A notice posted on its Instagram and Facebook pages says clearly that bicycles will not be allowed. The company has cited passenger safety and better movement within the metro system as the reasons.
The ban is not limited to the train coach. The company has also told station staff to stop passengers arriving with bicycles from entering the premises. This means that taking a bicycle into any station on this route will be prohibited.
The rules are different on the other routes. On Maha Metro's existing routes, the Vanaz-Ramwadi line (Line 2) and the PCMC-Swargate line (Line 1), passengers can take a bicycle inside the train. The condition is that they hold the bicycle themselves and ensure that other passengers are not inconvenienced.
This facility will not be available on Line 3. Passengers who change from Line 1 or Line 2 to the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar route will also have to leave their bicycles behind before entering the new line.
The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar metro corridor is 23.2 km long. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on November 3. The journey between the two ends of the route takes about 45 minutes. The line provides a direct public transport link between the IT hub at Hinjewadi and the area between there and Pune.
Commuters who cycle to catch the metro will now need to plan their journey in advance, as the ban on bicycles is in force on this line.
