Constable Amol Vasantrao Bhise, 42, was arrested after allegedly driving into Commissioner Amitesh Kumar's official residence on Tuesday night, and faces cases at two police stations.

A Pune police constable, Amol Vasantrao Bhise, 42, is under arrest after he drove a car into the gate of the official residence of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. The incident took place on Tuesday, with reports placing it in the evening and late night. The bungalow is in the Cantonment area. Officials confirmed the matter on Wednesday.

Bhise, who is attached to the Police Headquarters, is facing two separate cases. An attempt to murder case has been registered at Koregaon Park police station. A second case, for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty, has been registered at Bundgarden police station. Early accounts said only that he had been detained and that the sections invoked were not known. The later position is that he has been arrested. All of this is still allegation and nothing has been proved.

The car is said to be a Hyundai with registration number MH 12 WZ 4056. Bhise allegedly rammed it into the main gate and damaged it. It is also alleged that he then tried to drive it at the security personnel posted there, who had tried to stop him from entering. Whether anyone was hurt has not been disclosed. The guards and police at the entrance detained him on the spot.

Hearing the noise, the Commissioner came out himself. Seeing him, Bhise reportedly became flustered and stepped out of the car. He is said to have called the Commissioner his "godfather" and begun talking about his transfer. Policemen then caught him and took him to Bundgarden police station. From there he was taken to Sassoon Hospital for a medical examination, where he reportedly created a major commotion as well. Outside the bungalow, he is said to have kept shouting abuse and demanding answers for about half an hour.

Commissioner Kumar said Bhise was drunk and did not appear to be in a sound mental state. "He hit the gate with the vehicle and tried to get inside," Kumar said. The Commissioner also said Bhise has a poor disciplinary record and that his name has figured in several earlier cases. Bhise was suspended in 2025 after a case was registered on his wife's complaint, and was taken back into service in 2026.

Officials have not stated a motive. The reports differ on the background. One says the Commissioner had transferred him to the Police Headquarters on Tuesday. Another says he had been pressing for a posting to a particular Pune police station and was upset when the transfer list announced a day earlier did not give it to him. Within the department there is talk that his anger over the transfer was the cause, but this has not been officially stated. One account also says he may be struggling with mental health problems. Police are examining why he went to the residence and are also looking into his past record and the circumstances of his suspension and reinstatement.

The incident has raised questions about the security of senior officers and about discipline in the force. It is being said that nothing like this has happened before in the history of the city police, and strong resentment has been voiced over the conduct of the constable. Further action against him is under way.
