A youth riding a two-wheeler in the Ambethan area of Pune was abducted at around 5.30 pm on October 3. Some men took him away using three autorickshaws and a car. The incident caused brief panic in the area.
After the incident, a 30-year-old woman filed a complaint with the police. Given the seriousness of the case, North Mhalunge MIDC police and Mhalunge police began an investigation immediately.
On learning of the abduction, police began going through CCTV footage from Ambethan and several nearby locations. They needed to establish which way the suspects had gone and which vehicles were with them. Along with the footage, technical analysis was also used to track the suspects.
On the basis of the CCTV footage and the technical investigation, police first detained three men named Amol, Sachin and Nilesh from Shikrapur. They were questioned sharply. The questioning gave police key information about the reason for the abduction, the remaining suspects and the abducted youth.
Police found that the abduction stemmed from a dispute over money taken as an advance (uchal) for sugarcane harvesting work. The quarrel that began over the money dealings escalated until the youth was forcibly taken away along with his two-wheeler. Police then stepped up the search for the remaining suspects.
Acting on the information, teams from North Mhalunge MIDC police and Mhalunge police carried out an operation in Yavatmal district and arrested eight people in all. The arrested suspects are Amol Ramrao Rathod (29), Sachin Ramrao Rathod (25), Nilesh Santosh Rathod (27), Shubham Pralhad Jadhav (25), Sandeep Gulab Rathod (42) and Indal Thavara Jadhav (40). All of them are originally from Dindala, Umarkhed taluka, Yavatmal district. Raju Bapurao Chavan (44) is from Varud Bebi, Umarkhed taluka, Yavatmal district, while Sandeep Udaybhan Jadhav (32) is from Naiknagar Tanda, Hadgaon taluka, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
During the operation, police seized the car used in the abduction, three autorickshaws and the abducted youth's motorcycle. Further investigation is under way on the basis of these vehicles. The suspects continue to be questioned to understand the full chain of events in the abduction.
As a result of the swift police investigation, the abducted youth was rescued safe within just 24 hours. Police solved the case with the help of CCTV footage, technical analysis and information from the suspects. North Mhalunge MIDC police and Mhalunge police are conducting the further investigation into the abduction, which is linked to the dispute over the sugarcane harvesting advance.
