A quarrel between two families who had gathered to settle a divorce case turned violent in the Sadar police station area of Nagpur on Monday evening. The fight escalated to the use of knives, leaving two people injured. Both were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Sadar police have registered a case against seven people, including a woman, under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act. Police have begun examining the role of each of the accused.

According to the complaint filed with police, the complainant, Suman Kailas Pusate (50), said a domestic dispute had been going on for a long time between her nephew and his wife. The two families had gathered near the District Collector's office on Monday to end the dispute by mutual consent and take the divorce proceedings forward.

The talks were reportedly about preparing the divorce papers and returning the jewellery and other items given at the time of the wedding. During this, an argument broke out between the two sides over some matter and quickly turned into a heated exchange.

The complaint states that Suman Pusate and her sister objected to the alleged fight. Meanwhile, accused Mayur Bhagat (40) allegedly attacked Ravindra Bhaurao Lohkare (60) with a knife. The blow hit Ravindra on the head and he was injured.

Ranganath Bhaurao Lohkare (44) stepped in to save his brother. It is alleged that Bhagat then stabbed Ranganath in the abdomen as well. Even after both were hurt, the fight did not stop, and it is alleged that others also beat them with kicks and punches.

Panic spread at the spot after the incident. The injured Ravindra and Ranganath were rushed to hospital. On receiving information, Sadar police registered the complaint and began an investigation.

According to police, the accused are Mayur Bhagat, his wife, his younger brother, Diksha Suchit Moon (28), a resident of Amravati, Moon's father (60) and two other male relatives.

Sadar police are now questioning people who were present at the time and examining the role of each accused.
