According to the department, the estimated value of the entire seized consignment is Rs 94,36,708. A case has been registered against five people at Turbhe police station.
The rationing department's team had received information that fuel was being filled into one tanker from the outlet of another tanker carrying diesel. Acting on this, officials reached the spot and raided it.
During the raid, a tanker bearing registration number WB 19 L 2981 and another bearing MH 46 BM 9202 were taken into custody. About 14,000 litres of diesel and 25,000 litres of a petroleum-like liquid were seized from the two tankers.
The department said the total estimated value of all the goods seized in the action comes to Rs 94,36,708. A case has been registered against five people in all, including the drivers and owners of both tankers.
The action was carried out under the guidance of Chandrakant Dange, Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies, Mumbai. The team of Deputy Controller Ganesh Bellale coordinated it.
The joint action involved the Mumbai flying squad and officials and staff of the Belapur rationing office. Turbhe police are now investigating what kind of fuel was actually seized, why it was being transferred from one tanker to the other, and other aspects of the case.
The action, taken on suspicion of unauthorised transfer of fuel, has drawn the attention of people in the area. However, the allegations in the case have not yet been proved. Further investigation is expected to bring out more information.
