Navi Mumbai residents have got relief on water. The state government has ordered a 10 per cent water cut in all municipal corporations, but no cut will be made in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik announced this.
The planning of the city's water supply, the stock in the dam and shortcomings in the distribution system were discussed at an adjourned general body meeting of the municipal corporation. At the meeting on Friday, Mayor Sujata Patil and Leader of the House Sagar Naik directed the commissioner that no water cut be made. The commissioner told the House that emphasis would be laid on water planning and measures would be taken to save water.
The commissioner also gave details about the Morbe dam. The dam's total designed capacity is 190 million cubic metres. As of the morning of October 23, 2026, the dam holds 160 million cubic metres of water. The city uses about 14.40 million cubic metres of water every month. The dam also has a dead storage of 5.52 million cubic metres.
Special teams are being deployed in every ward to save water. These teams will trace illegal tap connections and disconnect them, take action by imposing fines, and work to stop leakage. The teams will be headed by assistant commissioners.
Use of treated water is being made mandatory for the construction sector, service centres and car washing centres. All wells will be brought back into use, and their water will be used for toilets, gardening and washing.
The city's gardens will be supplied only with water treated at sewage treatment plants (STPs). The remaining projects for gardens in Vashi and Nerul will also be completed in the next two months. Work to replace 107 old water tanks with 33 new ones is under way in phases.
A SCADA system has been installed to monitor water distribution. The 24/7 water supply scheme under way in Belapur is expected to save 15 to 20 per cent of water.
