A significant step has been taken towards making Maharashtra a major global centre for jewellery making and export. The India Jewellery Park is being built at Mahape in Navi Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the project.
The project is expected to bring in investment of about Rs 25,000 crore. It is also expected to create about one lakh direct and indirect jobs.
The park will come up on 22 acres at Mahape. The target is to set up more than 2,000 manufacturing units there. The project is seen as important for promoting jewellery making, the use of new technology and export-grade products. Various businesses in the jewellery industry could get a chance to expand production and trade at a single location. Skilled artisans and workers are also expected to find new employment opportunities.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said the effort is to take Maharashtra to the forefront of the jewellery industry on the strength of new technology, skilled workers and opportunities in world markets. The India Jewellery Park is expected to raise production capacity and speed up exports. Indian jewellery is in great demand in world markets, and access to modern production facilities could help the industry expand.
Employment is the project's biggest feature. About one lakh direct and indirect jobs are expected. Related sectors such as jewellery making, design, production, technology, packaging, transport and export could also benefit. However, the actual employment figure will depend on how the project is implemented, how the production units are set up and when industries begin work.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said more than 50 per cent of the country's total gems and jewellery exports come from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai. He also assured the basic facilities the project needs and support from the administration. A large network of jewellery businesses already exists in and around Mumbai. If it is backed by modern production facilities, Maharashtra's place in the global jewellery industry could become stronger.
The park at Mahape is expected to raise the industrial importance of Navi Mumbai. The project will focus on increasing investment, employment and exports. Its economic impact will become clear only after the project is on the ground and work begins in the production units. If the set targets for investment and jobs are met, Maharashtra could get a bigger opportunity in jewellery production and export.
