Two minors in Nagpur allege sexual abuse; 60-year-old man and a father named in police cases

Two separate cases of sexual abuse of minor girls have come to light in Nagpur. In Sakkardara, a 16-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped by her aunt's 60-year-old brother-in-law. In Kapilnagar, a 15-year-old girl has alleged that her own father sexually abused her for three years.

The first incident, in the Sakkardara police station area, dates to October 1. According to the complaint by the 16-year-old, she had gone to her aunt's house with her mother and her paternal aunt. While the family sat having tea on the ground floor, the aunt asked the girl to take tea to her brother-in-law, who was in a room on the first floor. As soon as the girl reached the room with the tea, the accused caught her hand. He dragged her towards the bed. The girl resisted and pleaded with him to let go, saying, "Bade papa, what are you doing?", but the accused did not stop. He allegedly locked her in the room, covered her mouth and raped her.

After the incident, the accused twisted the girl's arm and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. When the frightened girl reached her mother downstairs, she fainted. Out of fear, she told no one what had happened to her.

On October 26, children at her school were being told about sexual offences and how to protect themselves, under the "Bharat Surakshit Bachpan Abhiyan". The guidance she received gave the girl the courage to tell her family. After reaching home, she told her parents everything about the October 1 incident. With their help, a complaint was filed at Sakkardara police station. Police have registered a case against the accused under various sections of the rape provisions and the POCSO Act and have begun an investigation.

The second incident, in the Kapilnagar police station area, involves a 15-year-old girl who has accused her father of forcing himself on her since June 2023. According to the girl, her father forced her into a sexual act in June 2023 when she was alone at home. He continued to abuse her after that. The father threatened to kill her mother and brother if she told anyone. Out of this fear, the girl stayed silent for a long time.

On October 31, the girl finally told her mother about the abuse. With her mother's help, a complaint was filed at Kapilnagar police station. Police have registered a case under the rape provisions and the POCSO Act and arrested the father.

The two incidents have raised serious questions about the safety of girls and the trust placed in the family environment.
