Thane Police Commissionerate has taken a hard line against narcotics. Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre, large-scale action is under way in Mumbra and the surrounding area. In this series of actions, police raided a location in Mumbra and seized mephedrone (MD) worth about Rs 1.5 crore. Four foreign nationals have been booked in the case. According to police, the action has caused panic in the network of drug peddlers.
Police had received reliable information that some foreign nationals were holding a stock of narcotics in Hariom Building in Samrat Nagar, under Mumbra police station limits. Acting on this, police raided the premises. Four foreign nationals were detained during the raid. Three of them are from Tanzania and one is a Nigerian national.
On searching them and the residence, police found about 1.5 kg of MD (mephedrone). The seized drug is valued at about Rs 1 crore 50 lakh. Including mobile phones and documents, the total seizure is worth Rs 1 crore 50 lakh 25 thousand.
Police are now looking into several aspects. They are checking when the detained foreign nationals came to India, on what visa, whether their visas and passports have expired, and whether any case was registered against them earlier. Police are also finding out who gave them permission to stay there (live-in licence) and who the real owner of the house is.
To trace where they got the drug from and to whom they were to supply it, the full backward and forward linkage, police are using technical and human intelligence.
Thane Police have begun action not only against peddlers but also against drug users. In Mumbra, 625 people have been acted against for drug use since January 1, 2026. In addition, 950 people consuming tobacco products in public places have been fined and proceeded against legally. Alongside enforcement, an awareness campaign is being run in schools, colleges and among the general public on the dangers of drugs.
In another case, police received information that ganja was being sold and kept in the Irani Basti area of Mumbra. Police detained a suspect and seized 1.25 kg of ganja from the person. Preliminary investigation has shown that the ganja was being brought in from states such as Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. Work to trace its source is continuing. According to police, the entire action was carried out by Thane Police Commissionerate on its own, and Navi Mumbai Police were not involved.
