A crane being dismantled at an under-construction MHADA building in Ganeshpeth fell at 10:30 am; police have registered a case of accidental death.
A crane collapsed at the site of an under-construction Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building in Nagpur's Ganeshpeth area. Two people were killed and two others were injured. The injured are being treated at Orion Hospital.
One of the dead is Vishwanath Kathane, a resident of Bhandara district, and the other is Mukesh Nishad, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. The two injured workers are from Jharkhand.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane, the accident took place at 10:30 am. A crane operator and three workers were at the site at the time. The crane was being dismantled, that is, taken apart, when it suddenly fell.
Police are trying to establish where things went wrong. The inquiry will examine whether the incident was caused by a technical fault or human error. DCP Madane said police are also looking into whether the required safety rules were followed.
For now, police have registered a case of accidental death. DCP Madane said the senior police inspector is investigating the matter.
The Ganeshpeth building is being constructed under MHADA's supervision. The construction was being carried out through a contractor linked to Vijay Company.
Police will now take information from government supervising engineers, MHADA engineers and engineers of the construction company. DCP Madane said this would make clear whether the necessary precautions were taken during the work.
A further hurdle in the investigation is that no CCTV footage is available at the spot. DCP Madane said police are examining this aspect too. The actual cause of the accident will emerge only after these inquiries and the investigation.
