Pradip Mohanlal Thakur, named in over 15 serious cases, was detained after allegedly assaulting a Sakkardara police constable who questioned him at a deserted spot.

Nagpur: Another incident in Sakkardara has shown how emboldened criminals in the city have become. Pradip Mohanlal Thakur of Nandanvan, a notorious criminal named in more than 15 serious cases, allegedly assaulted a police constable.

When asked why he was present at a deserted spot, the accused flew into a rage, grabbed the constable by the collar and slapped him. He also threatened to kill him.

Thakur is a notorious criminal from Nandanvan. His brother Suhas is also a criminal. More than 15 serious cases are registered against Pradip.

On the night of October 28, Constable Sandeep Lolusare of Sakkardara police station was patrolling the Kamla Nehru College premises with colleagues. Near the NIT Complex, the police team spotted Pradip Thakur at a deserted place. Given his criminal background, the police personnel stopped him. Constable Sandeep asked him why he was there. Pradip flew into a rage and began misbehaving with the policeman.

Pradip abused Constable Sandeep, grabbed him by the collar and began slapping him. He then threatened to kill him. The alleged assault on a constable in front of the police team made the matter serious. The police personnel immediately took Pradip into custody and brought him to the police station. Sakkardara police have registered a case against him under relevant sections, including obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty and assault.

Questions are also being raised over rising criminal activity in the Sakkardara police station area. MD (mephedrone) and other narcotics are reportedly being sold openly in the area, and the police are said to have failed to curb it. It is because criminals are emboldened, it is alleged, that Pradip attacked the constable.
