Demand for CNG cars in the Indian automobile market continues to rise. Vehicles with low running costs and good mileage are particularly popular with buyers. To capitalise on this demand, Maruti Suzuki is reportedly preparing to strengthen its CNG portfolio further.

The company's upcoming plans are said to include a 7-seater flagship CNG SUV and facelift versions of four popular models. The Fronx, Grand Vitara, WagonR and Ertiga are expected to receive updates. The new SUV could give large families a CNG option as well.

Starting with the Fronx, the popular crossover could arrive with updates in the coming period. It may get the 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine with a CNG option, which could produce roughly 69 bhp in CNG mode. The new Fronx may show a revised front grille, updated bumpers and a more modern design. Whether features such as ventilated seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and Level 2 ADAS will be offered is a matter of curiosity, but these features have not been officially confirmed.

Buyers also have high expectations of the Grand Vitara facelift. The SUV is estimated to be introduced in late 2026 or early 2027. The new model may get an updated grille, a 10.1-inch touchscreen and a better interior. If the CNG tank is placed under the vehicle, it could help increase boot space. An official announcement from the company on these changes is awaited.

The WagonR hatchback is also reported to be preparing for a major update. The new model may see changes to the exterior design as well as the interior. According to reports on a test vehicle that was spotted, an underbody CNG tank may be under consideration. If so, boot space could be used better. The updated WagonR could prove important for buyers looking for an economical CNG car for daily city travel.

The Ertiga, popular with families, is also likely to get a new design and features in its facelift. Changes such as a mesh-style grille, LED headlights and separate AC vents for third-row passengers are expected. A CNG option with the 1.5-litre engine may continue. If an underbody CNG tank is provided, there could be more space for luggage. Official information on these changes has not yet emerged.

The vehicle drawing the most attention among these upcoming models is the 7-seater SUV codenamed Y17, which is said to be based on the Grand Vitara. It could be an important addition to the company's premium SUV range. Features such as a 1.5-litre engine, a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch screen and ventilated seats are likely. Different estimates are being made about the placement of the CNG tank. The SUV could compete with vehicles such as the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus.

Overall, these possible plans from Maruti Suzuki could increase competition in the CNG car market. Official information from the company on launch dates, prices, mileage and actual features is necessary. Buyers planning to purchase a new CNG car should therefore wait for the company's official announcements before making a final decision.
