Thousands of protesters gathered on the streets of London on Saturday over the war in Gaza and the suffering of Palestinian civilians there. The march, held under the name "National March for Palestine", protested against Israel's military action.
The demands were clear: that Palestinian civilians be protected, that the conflict in Gaza end, and that the supply of weapons to Israel be stopped. The protest has once again heated up the debate in Britain over the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Activists from various organisations supporting Palestine, along with ordinary citizens, took part in the march. Participants carried Palestinian flags and posters bearing messages against the war, using them to voice their opposition to the military action in Gaza.
The protesters demanded that the people of Gaza be given a safe environment and be provided with food, water and medical care. They said the war had shattered the lives of ordinary people and that the international community should take the situation seriously.
The biggest demand of the protest was to stop the supply of weapons to Israel. The protesters asked the British government to take a tough stand on Israel's military action and to take concrete steps to protect Palestinian civilians.
Pro-Palestine organisations pointed out that civilian deaths, displacement of people and damage to infrastructure have become serious problems in the Gaza war. They said diplomatic efforts to end the war therefore need to be stepped up.
London police had increased security arrangements in the area ahead of the march. Traffic and crowd management had been planned in advance, keeping in mind the likelihood of a large turnout. During the protest, the police focus remained on maintaining law and order.
Protests and political discussion over the Israel-Palestine conflict are under way in several countries, including Britain. While demands for the protection of Palestinian civilians are being raised on one side, Israel's security and the issue of Hamas attacks are also being discussed on the other. In this climate, the London march has again brought to the fore the demands to end the war and protect civilians.
