Russia and the US have stood against each other as traditional adversaries for years, and the Cold War between them is well known. In a world that changes by the day, it is getting harder to say who is whose enemy and who is whose friend. The two countries once competed to become the global superpower, but after the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia fell somewhat behind in that race.

After the Second World War, the US became a superpower beyond doubt. Even so, the quarrels between Russia and the US never fully ended. As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, talk of an alleged diesel purchase agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russia has gained strength.

On one side the US is backing Ukraine, and on the other a claim has emerged that it is buying fuel from Russia. For this reason, questions are being raised about US policy. However, the exact details of the agreement and its terms are not clear, so these claims need to be independently verified.

Russia has been hit with several economic sanctions because of the war with Ukraine. When Ukraine began leaning towards Western countries, Russia did not take it well. Putin formed the view that Ukraine could be easily taken over and the matter ended, and Ukraine was then attacked. The US and European countries then came forward to help Ukraine. The US gave Ukraine weapons and imposed strict economic sanctions on Russia. India, too, was told not to trade in oil with Russia.

Similarly, trading oil with Iran was also barred. But global political analysts have now begun to discuss that the US itself has started making agreements to buy oil from Russia. The aim of the sanctions on Russia is to curb the financial resources available to it for the war.

If the claim that the US is buying Russian diesel proves true, questions could arise about the effect of the sanctions. Earnings from energy trade are vital to the Russian economy, so this transaction is being watched closely.

Given the US role of supporting Ukraine and keeping economic pressure on Russia, a claim of fuel trade with Russia may appear contradictory. But without examining the nature of the agreement, the companies involved, the date of the deal and the actual source of the fuel, it cannot be concluded that Trump has made a major diesel purchase agreement with Russia.

In the global fuel market, many countries and companies buy oil and fuel from different suppliers. The original source of the fuel reaching a country and the role of companies in the deal therefore become important. If there is any such deal involving Russian fuel, it is necessary to understand the exemption it received under the sanctions and the legal conditions. Only then can any final conclusion be drawn on US policy.
