Competition among small and affordable electric cars is growing. Suzuki has now readied its new electric car, the e-Sky, for Japan, where it will go on sale from November 16.

In Indian currency, the starting price is about Rs 12.97 lakh. The top variant is estimated to cost up to Rs 17.07 lakh. The company plans to bring the car to Europe in 2027 as well. No announcement has been made so far about launching it in India.

The Suzuki e-Sky is 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,625 mm tall. Its wheelbase is 2,460 mm and ground clearance is 140 mm. The company has developed a separate electric platform, called Heartect-e, for the car. It allows more efficient use of space for parts, including the battery and motor.

The car has an electric motor with the codename BB8A. The motor produces 47 kW, or 63 hp, of power and 133 Nm of torque. The eAxle system, which combines the motor, inverter and reduction gear, weighs only 47 kg.

The e-Sky has a 26 kWh battery pack, which is reported to be sourced from a BYD-linked company. According to the company, the car's energy consumption is 97 Wh/km. On the WLTC test cycle, it can cover up to 310 km on a single charge. The actual range can vary with driving style, speed, weather and use of the air-conditioner.

For charging, 6 kW AC charging is standard. A full charge takes about 4.5 hours after the low-battery warning appears. The top variant gets 50 kW DC fast charging, which takes about 25 minutes to reach 80 per cent.

Features include a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 4.2-inch driver display, LED headlamps, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and six speakers. Safety features include six airbags, a 360-degree camera, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.

In Japan's small car segment, the Suzuki e-Sky will compete with the BYD Racco and the Honda N-One. Its compact size, low energy consumption and claimed range of up to 310 km could draw buyers' attention.
