Television sports presenter Shefali Bagga, who rose to recognition through 'Bigg Boss', is in the news in connection with the Mahadev betting app case. It has emerged that she deposited Rs 1.20 crore during the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation.
She is said to have returned to the investigating agency the money she received for allegedly promoting the Mahadev betting app. Bagga has now given her own account of the matter.
Bagga says that, like many other celebrities and public figures, her work was limited to promoting some brands on social media. She clarified that she had no role or stake in the functioning of these brands or other entities. According to her, she promoted the brand unknowingly.
She also said she has cooperated fully with the agency and returned the money in question. She added that she has full faith in Indian law.
The question now is what the allegations against her are. According to the ED's chargesheet, Bagga is alleged to have taken around Rs 1.5 crore for making promotional videos for the Mahadev betting app syndicate. During the investigation of the same case, it came to light that she had deposited Rs 1.20 crore.
It is also reported that ED officials seized Rs 30 lakh in cash during a search of her house in Delhi. Following this action, Bagga's name has once again come up for discussion.
It is important to distinguish between allegations and the outcome of an investigation in this case. No one can be held guilty merely on the basis of allegations.
The Mahadev betting app is also known as Mahadev Book and is described as an allegedly illegal online betting network. Investigating agencies allege that online betting on sports such as cricket and football was run through the platform.
During the investigation of the network, several people and celebrities have been questioned about their alleged roles. The ED is examining the financial transactions in the case and the roles of those concerned.
Bagga has said she promoted the brand unknowingly and cooperated with the investigation. All eyes are now on the further investigation in the case and on official information.
