Ragging alleged at Nagpur Government Dental College hostel; three seniors asked to vacate
Juniors were allegedly abused with caste slurs and made to pick up shards of a broken liquor bottle; the anti-ragging committee has removed three senior students and police have begun an inquiry.
A serious case of ragging and mistreatment of junior students has surfaced at the hostel of the Government Dental College in Nagpur. It is alleged that juniors were humiliated with casteist abuse and made to pick up glass shards from a broken liquor bottle. The college administration has taken action following the allegations.
According to the allegations, many students of the college live in the hostel. Junior and senior students are housed separately, yet about two days ago senior students called two junior students to one place. It is alleged that the two were abused and humiliated with casteist remarks there.
It is also alleged that the seniors smashed an empty liquor bottle and made the juniors pick up the broken glass. The students went home for the Diwali holidays, and the complaint about the incident came to light afterwards through their families.
After learning of the incident, the college administration and senior officials took the matter seriously. The joint director and the commissioner also took note of it and directed that an inquiry be held and a report submitted.
The anti-ragging committee met on Thursday. At the meeting, three senior students were directed to vacate the hostel immediately, which means they were removed from the hostel with immediate effect. The action is for now temporary. If the students concerned are found guilty in the inquiry, stricter action could be taken against them.
A complaint has also been filed at Ajni police station. On Thursday itself, a police team went to the Government Dental College and gathered information about the case. Police have thus begun their inquiry at the college.
According to available information, the academic session for new students at the college began only about 15 days ago, so the new batch has been there for only a short time. Further action now depends on the findings of the committee's inquiry and the police investigation.
